So what’s happened since last I posted…

Dark Sun game never took off. Characters were created, campaign designs were laid out, Essentials and Hybrid rules were argued over and then Gamma World came out.

Gamma World is crazy silly fun. Not sure I’d want to do a long-term campaign in the system but for an occasional “get togethor and watch silly stuff happen then the dice hit the table” game it is pretty good. Though it also helps if you have players who know better than to take their characters too seriously.

Watched season one of both The Mentalist and Leverage on DVD. Liked both shows enough that I’ve gotten the 2nd seasons on DVD now (they in fact arrived today and are on my desk next to my laptop).

Watched Sherlock on PBS on their Masterpiece Mystery program. Really really good, Steven Moffat (yes, the Doctor Who and Coupling guy) and Mark Gatiss (who has also written Doctor Who eppys) did a great job in both updating the characters to the modern day and in keeping the right sort of feel and style to the characters. What they failed in was only producing 3 episodes and the next set doesn’t air until August of 2011.

More D&D Essentials products came out. Short form: Monster Vault is tokens and a small book containing monsters that I am pretty sure have already come out in 4E monster manuals, Dungeon Tiles Master Set: The City is another box full of great tiles that are prefect if you missed the earlier tile releases and actually intend to use them, and Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms is book with about 190 pages of new/updated rules and 175 pages that were already printed in Heroes of the Fallen Lands.

On the flip-side, D&D Insider updated their Character Builder to be a web-app that is actually pretty sharp and pretty snazzy and have started showing off the long-long-long awaited Game Table (it was what, 3 years ago it was announced as a DDI feature and just now finally seeing it?).

Champions Online started a closed beta of the F2P features (Which the NDA allows me to say I am taking part in, but I can’t tell you about the changes like the QoL & UI improvements or the additions to the powersets or the great new content changes and additions. Nope. Can’t talk about those at all.)

Star Trek Online just finished it’s second set of Feature Episodes and they really were great ones. Lots of nice improvements and changes in the Devidian missions that I hope get used in updates to existing content through out the game.

The STO Foundry is supposedly going to be available for Open Beta testing next week (Didn’t get invited to that CB unfortunately). Going to be interesting seeing those tools then as I am looking at them mostly as a hinting towards what the Forge tools for Neverwinter may or may not be like.

Not much new information on Neverwinter which remains my most-anticipated game for next year.

This month is NaNoWriMo so I started writing a lot more this month. More about that in another post.

Had an abscessed tooth that I had to get removed the other day. Good news, it cost far less to do that then I thought. Bad news, now I get this empty spot in my jaw that is going to likely have to be filled with an implant or a bridge and both of those are looking to be fucktastically expensive.

Thirty-seven days until Christmas. Not even sure who I am going to be shopping for yet, and a friend of mine chatted at me over Steam today that she’d finished all of her holiday shopping already. Gyah…

2nd to last episode of this season of Eureka was yesterday, the Warehouse 13 season is down to just a few left. Not sure where Psyche or Burn Notice are at for their seasons, but I can never make sense of when USA’s seasons start or end.

Eureka has been a lot of fun this season, it’s 4th (or 5th if you count the two parts of season 3 seperately). Without spoiling too much, if you have a chance and you can watch it off of OnDemand with your cable or find it online, this is a really good season to start off watching the show. Their was enough of a change at the start of the season to make it easy for new fans to get into without actually alienating existing fans. Always a fun trick to pull off. Only 1 episode left (I haven’t watched yesterdays yet myself) so seeing how they manage to actually tie togethor all the plot points of the season will be interesting.

Warehouse 13 surprised me last year with how fun it was. Was glad to see it come back for a second season and they did a very good job before the season started to not spoil the season’s beginning. (Cliffhanger at end of season 1, despite the ad blitz for season 2 they managed not to spoil the resolution of the cliffhanger by showing any scenes that would give it away.) Looks like 4 episodes left in the season to go, so that means another month until I have to come up with something new to watch.

Psyche and Burn Notice both got me back into watching them this season. Actually missed most of the previous season of Burn Notice so it took me a bit to catch up, and Psyche previously ran hot-and-cold with me as some episodes were great and some of them just had a few too many annoying ‘sound effect and zoom in as Shaun notices something!’ moments in them. But both shows have been fun this season and I hope they both get renewed for another.

Other than that, watched a bit of True Blood (started reading the books and was surprised by how fun the first one was, need to get some of the others sometime), and the Closer (can’t bring myself to watch the show regularly, but it is usually pretty good).

During the summer I picked up season 1 of Castle and season 1 of White Collar on dvd. Watched the Castle season already and loved it, looking forward to season 2 coming out on dvd soon and season 3 starting on TV.

White Collar I caught an episode of on tv, looked interesting, picked up the first season on dvd and just haven’t gotten to watching it yet. It is on my ‘shelf of dvds to watch’ along with the entire series of Deadwood (saw most of it on HBO, been meaning to watch the dvds), the second season of Black Lagoon (watched the first season, own the manga up to vol 9, just not gotten to season 2 yet), the complete series of Claymore (manga is still ongoing when last I looked, curious to see how different the anime is and where it ends at), and the first part of Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood (loved the manga series which has since ended, the first anime series was pretty good though very untrue to the manga, the bits I’ve already seen of this anime series are more accurate to the manga though still not entirely so).

Spent a chunk of yesterday watching the funeral procession for Teddy Kennedy. Impressive to see how many people turned out for it, how many showed up just to stand on the side of the road and watch all the cars go by. Been interesting watching the programs about his life as well and how much he did and how little of it was used to promote his name or personal visibility. Truly the passing of one of the great elder statesman.

HBO did a special about him, “Teddy Kennedy: In His Own Words” I think it was called. DVR’d it but haven’t watched it yet. Probably won’t get around to watching it until Tuesday when I am somewhat planning to spend the afternoon watching all the other TV that recorded for me over the weekend.

Aside from watching that I spent a good chunk of time doing laundry and dishes and playing Champions Online.

Trying to decide if I need to buy more clothes or not. I tend to hate clothes shopping but I figure that if I buy a couple more outfits to wear around town for work then I might be able to push laundry back to a once-a-week thing instead of twice-a-week. Yes, the argument that ‘more clothes = less time doing laundry’ may very well be what it takes for me to go clothes shopping this year…

In Champions Online I have three characters I am playing mostly right now: Steel Crane (MA:Unarmed), Kinetica (Force Blast + some TK), Nightborn (Darkness + Sorcery). All have been fun and the game is just very impressive looking.

The Head Start event has been something of a disappointment though. The End of Beta with the giant robots was great, but the Head Start has had this Qularr (alien bug monsters) invasion event which seems a bit buggy. Enemies spawning in mid-air and being half dead from falling, NPCs killing them before the PCs get too, and some random weird sudden-death despawns.

A disappointment, but aside from that silly event the launch has been smooth as silk. No problems logging in or playing at all. Actually starting to think I need a second alarm clock so I have one to beep and tell me when I need to go to bed so I can get enough sleep to actually wake up when the other beeps to tell me I have to get up.

Not sure which to play today. All have been fun so far, I have another I have made (Electricity blast) that I haven’t really played yet. Still pondering making an Archery or an Ice (Chilljoy) or a Might (Protector One) or a Telekinetic or a Power Armor or a Gadgetry or a Twin Blades character…

So many cool powers, so much to try.

Man, it is Thursday already. The week just shot by. Almost September as well, this year has just been shooting by.

Stupidly hot again today, worse than yesterday. Which is disappointing because yesterday morning, while leaving the house, it actually felt like autumn for the first time this year. A few clouds in the sky, sunlight at that low but-not-quite-winter angle, and there was a cool crisp bite to the morning air. Something that held the hint of the idea that soon the leaves would be turning, dressing the trees in reds and golds.

I like autumn.

As for my other current obsession… The CO ‘Head Start’ begins at 10am tomorrow. I have a pre-order from the right sort of store (the one that offered the pre-orders with the fun goodies) so I’ll be able to play as soon as the servers come up. Will be an interesting rush as that happens, seeing how many people will be on right away and how freakishly over-crowded the tutorial zones will be.

On another CO note, I started a wiki to record all of the stuff I have found in game. I did one for CoX ages back, but I stopped maintaining that one after I left the game and it disappeared to the nether realms of my HDD a while back when swapping hosting services for my website.

The game launches officially on the 1st, or next Tuesday. Which also happens to be the day I start a certification course. 9am to noon, twice a week from then until the third week of December. Gyah… Not sure what to expect of it yet. I imagine that because of the subject matter it’ll swing one of two ways: very interesting or boring to the point that I find myself longing for the peace of the grave.

Been watching Warehouse 13 for the last couple of nights off of On Demand (I have ComCast for my cable provider…). I missed the first few episodes of the show but from what I’ve seen so far it looks kind of fun. I hope it lasts. It just feels like a show with a niche audience. Still, best to enjoy the show while it lasts rather then mourn what the future may bring it.

Speaking of shows with niche audiences… I really need to look online sometime and see if I can find the last few episodes of Pushing Daisies. There were three episodes that didn’t originally air when the shows final season sort of ended abruptly that were supposed to have been aired at a much later date but I must have missed them. Well, the later date was back about eight months ago…

On one hand, I rather miss Pushing Daisies as it was quirky and fun. On the other hand, the creator of the show went back to writing for Heroes and I think he likely single-handedly saved the second half of last season.

Anyways, I need to make dinner, water my lawn (stupid hot weather…), and then likely work on my wiki a bit more before I turn in early so as to make sure I am up in time for the servers to come up.

So my weekend can be summed up as ‘Champions Online’ and ‘compost’.

Got ten yards of compost delivered back on Thursday. Dumped onto the end of my driveway. Slowly been moving it around to my backyard to build up the flowerbeds a little since the soil is otherwise complete crap. Too much clay, too many rocks, hoping to add some compost now and rototill it later and hope to build up some better soil that way so stuff will grow better.

Okay, not communicating too well. Too sleepy. Stayed up late the last few nights to play the CO Open Beta.

Yesterday I got my Force character through the Desert entirely and that took it to 14 and moved them on to Millennium City to start quests there. Today I logged in and thought I’d get my Munitions character though the Canada missions and have two people for M.City.

Uh… Didn’t quite work out. They lowered exp rates in the overnight patch and what should have taken me from 9-14 instead got me barely into level 12. So my Munitions character ended up doing the Canada and the Desert missions and that got it to 14 and on to the big city.

Millennium City, by the way, is both gorgeous looking and huge. So big, no zoning between sections, it actually feels like it could be a real full-size city. But with the exp nerf I haven’t had much luck doing anything there. I quickly ran through all the level 14 missions, and the level 15 missions and now I am looking at the level 16s and not sure I can survive them as I am only halfway through level 14 exp’wise.

Hoping they come up with a better adjustment for character advancement rate and exp hand-outs before the game goes live. I really don’t want to have to spend too much time grinding just to be able to survive missions.

Other than that, I watched the most recent two episodes of Eureka that I had sitting on my DVR. Fun show, pretty good season so far. The show has never been one that I really felt rushed too see, but has always been one I enjoyed watching. At least they have a better sponsor and product placement this season. The car they have been pimping in some shots is far less annoying that the Degree deodorant from last season (I think it was Degree, I forget now which brand it was). Still, I have to wonder how the Sheriff’s love life will go this season. The last time they tried to have him date someone else it was the dry cleaning lady in season 2 I think and she just disappeared between seasons without any mention in season 3. Tess though is a more interesting character so it’ll be interesting to see how things happen from here on out.

ANyays, need sleep now. Badly. End of beta event is tomorrow in CO. Of course, I have to be across town doing some work tomorrow. Just need to get work done quickly so I can get back home and have time to enjoy fighting giant robots.
